Zelensky To Sign New Mineral Deal With U.S.During White House Visit

On Monday, President Donald Trump announced that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to visit the United States later this week to finalize a significant mineral agreement between the two nations. Trump mentioned to the press that Zelensky’s arrival is slated for Friday, adding that he has no objections to the visit.
Several Ukrainian sources have verified to various news outlets that the meeting between Zelensky and Trump is scheduled for Friday at the White House, where they will formalize the deal. According to The Financial Times, Ukraine has accepted the terms laid out by the Trump administration for this mineral pact, aiming to strengthen ties with the U.S. This agreement came together after the U.S. relinquished its initial request for a $500 billion share of future mineral profits, which was intended as repayment for aid provided to Ukraine over the past three years.
Trump emphasized the scale of the deal on Tuesday, describing it as potentially worth a trillion dollars. He remarked to journalists that the U.S. has invested vast sums in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, a war he believes should never have started.
Reports indicate that the agreement will create a fund supported by Ukraine, which will allocate half of the profits from future sales of state-controlled mineral assets, such as oil, gas, and related infrastructure. This fund is intended to finance development projects within Ukraine. However, the deal excludes resources currently managed by Ukraine’s major oil and gas companies, which contribute directly to the nation’s treasury.
The terms of the agreement, as reported, do not specify any concrete security commitments from the U.S. that Ukraine had sought, nor do they clarify the extent of the U.S. share in the fund or the details of future "joint ownership" arrangements, which will be addressed in subsequent discussions.
This development follows Trump’s controversial remark last week, when he labeled Zelensky a "dictator." Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna, who has led the negotiations, described the mineral deal as just one element of a broader strategy. She noted that the U.S. administration has repeatedly framed it as part of a larger framework.
