Mike Johnson Outlines An America First Agenda After Winning Speakership

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) shared the Republican agenda in a 19-minute speech right after securing the speaker position last Friday.

Johnson began with a moment of silence to honor the 14 victims of a recent terrorist attack in New Orleans. He outlined seven core principles for his tenure as speaker: individual freedom, limited government, adherence to the rule of law, advocating for peace through strength, fiscal responsibility, promoting free markets, and upholding human dignity.

He criticized the past four years of divided governance: "The American people crave an America First approach. Unfortunately, Washington has often pursued the opposite, leading to open borders and excessive regulations harming our cities and innovation. Inflation and weak leadership have impoverished Americans and put our nation at risk."

Johnson announced that his first legislative priority would be border security. "Working alongside President Trump, we will ensure our border and immigration agents have the necessary tools to perform effectively. "We will secure our borders, deport dangerous criminal illegal immigrants, and complete the construction of the border wall."

He also addressed the economic issues, blaming the inflation on the American Rescue Plan introduced by President Joe Biden and the Democrats in 2021. Johnson promised that Republicans would counteract what he described as the Democrats' assault on the energy sector, aiming to boost America's energy production.

"We plan to reduce the size and influence of the government significantly," Johnson declared. "The power will be restored to the citizens. Together with President Trump, we will work towards creating a more streamlined, efficient federal workforce."
