President-elect Donald Trump is intensifying his campaign to integrate Greenland into the United States. On Monday night, he stated on his Truth Social platform that Greenland "would see substantial gains should it become part of our country."
In a video shared by Trump, a Greenlandic man dons a MAGA hat and calls for the president-elect to purchase Greenland, citing a desire to break free from Danish control. "We are the wealthiest nation globally and aren't using it," the man remarked. Alongside the video, Trump commented, "I hear that the Greenlanders support 'MAGA.' My son, Don Jr., and various representatives will be heading there to explore some of its splendid regions. Greenland is remarkable, and its residents would greatly benefit from becoming part of our nation. We would safeguard it and treasure it against a harsh external world. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!"
According to Reuters, Donald Trump Jr. briefly visited Nuuk, Greenland's capital, on Tuesday for a personal trip lasting about four to five hours. Before his departure, Trump Jr. clarified on a podcast that his visit was not about purchasing Greenland, stating, "No, I am not buying Greenland. I'm just going on an extended day trip there for personal reasons."
Trump has consistently emphasized that controlling Greenland is a key priority for his administration, noting last month, "For the sake of global freedom and national security, the U.S. believes that owning and controlling Greenland is essential." Following these remarks, Greenland's Prime Minister, Múte Egede, reaffirmed the territory's push for full independence from Denmark.
Egede highlighted in a New Year's speech, "The Greenlandic people's path to independence is laid out in the Self-Government Act, establishing a legal framework for achieving sovereignty." He also mentioned that a draft constitution has been developed. "Steps are underway to set up Greenland as an independent state within the legal framework of the Self-Government Act."
Greenland possesses significant potential in oil and minerals and is strategically located between the U.S. and Russia. However, in 2021, Greenland's left-leaning government stopped its long-term ambition to become an oil-producing nation, focusing instead on addressing the climate emergency.
Additionally, Trump has floated the idea of Canada joining the U.S. as the 51st state. Following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's resignation announcement, Trump suggested, "If Canada united with the U.S., there would be no tariffs, taxes would decrease significantly, and Canada would be completely secure from the constant threats by Russian and Chinese naval forces. Together, we would form an incredible nation!"
